I’m happy to back Anwar-led unity government: Wee

MCA president says Pakatan and Barisan must band together to secure victory in the upcoming state elections

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong says he has no issue supporting the unity government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH), under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at an event to rally support for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Gombak Setia candidate Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin at Dewan Wargamas Sri Gombak yesterday evening, Wee said PH and BN must band together to secure victory in the upcoming state elections.

“I told the prime minister you are still the PM the moment that we have decided to give you support.

“Even though we are not contesting the state polls we will help our fellow BN candidates to win,” Wee said.

“That is important because when you know the advantage and the organisation, you have to contribute.

“That is the traditional work of the party where all must go down to the ground and campaign together.”

Wee added that with the limited amount of time left to campaign before polling day on August 12, MCA is happy to organise events to drum up support for PH-BN candidates.

“We will continue hosting gatherings like today to speak to the Chinese community and convince them why we need to back Megat Zulkarnain (and other PH-BN candidates).

“So there is no issue (for us) to support the PM, we just need to make sure for this state elections that the Chinese community come out and give their support,” the former transport minister added.

Asked about remarks from former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek about MCA’s exclusion from the state polls as “tragic”, Wee refused to comment.

“I respect the former president whatever he has commented I think we have our way to communicate (these matters), so as sitting president I will not comment on what he has said but we do take note.” – August 3, 2023
