PN’s victories show people’s rejection of ‘fragile’ unity govt: Muhyiddin

The Perikatan Nasional chairman urges Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down

2:00 AM MYT

SHAH ALAM – Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) victories in the state elections serve as a clear referendum, illustrating that the people have rejected the “fragile” coalition between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In light of this, the PN chairman called upon Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down from their leadership positions.

Muhyiddin’s assertion comes following PN’s success in securing state constituency seats, including non-Malay majority areas like Kulim and Derga, bolstering the coalition’s belief that it possesses widespread support from both Malays and non-Malays alike.

“(The victories in Kulim and Derga) underscore the resounding rejection by both Malays and non-Malay communities of the fragile political alliance led by (Anwar) and (Zahid),” he said during a press conference held at Concorde Hotel early this morning.

“Therefore, it is true that this state election is a referendum on the people’s rejection of the PH-BN unity government.

“Anwar and Zahid, who lead this coalition, must take moral responsibility by resigning as prime minister and deputy prime minister immediately.”

Muhyiddin pointed out that the outcome of the state polls also underscores the diminishing relevance of Umno, as the party managed to secure only 19 out of 108 contested seats within the BN coalition.

This performance is notably poorer than their showing in the previous general elections (GE15), he said.

In GE15 last year, BN experienced its poorest electoral performance, clinching just 30 out of the 222 parliamentary seats available. – August 13, 2023
