Resign now, Wan Fayhsal tells Azam, Idrus after Muhyiddin’s acquittal

Bersatu youth chief says ex-PM’s other charges must also be dropped

5:07 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Kamal has called for the resignation of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun.

This follows former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s acquittal of all four of his bribery and abuse of power charges earlier today, after the court ruled that they were “vague, flawed, and unfounded”.

As such, Wan Fayhsal claimed the charges were politically motivated and were intended to tarnish the reputation of Bersatu and its president.

“This accusation was clearly fabricated for political reasons, specifically to weaken Bersatu and influence the people’s support before the state elections,” he said in a statement.

“The verdict today proved that any claim or accusation against (Muhyiddin) is slander. However, I am grateful that the truth has been proven and upheld.”

In a separate statement, Wan Fayhsal said Muhyiddin’s other charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) should also be dropped.

He added that since the main charges have been quashed, Muhyiddin’s three other Amla charges cannot stand on their own and should also be quashed.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin was acquitted of his four charges of bribery and abuse of power in connection with the Jana Wibawa initiative, which amounted to RM232.5 million.

High court judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the charges were vague, flawed, and unfounded as they did not contain details of the offences committed.

Muhyiddin’s remaining charges include two charges of receiving proceeds from unlawful activities from Bukhary Equity, where RM195 million was deposited into Bersatu’s CIMB Bank account.

He is also facing a charge in the Shah Alam sessions court on March 13 of receiving proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM5 million. The case has since been transferred to the sessions court here to be tried with the other cases. – August 15, 2023
