KUALA LUMPUR — Muda information chief Luqman Long has promised to fulfil his pledge to step down from his party position, following his loss in Terengganu’s Bandar seat during the recent state elections. 

In a Twitter post last night, Luqman said that while he intends to live up to his pledge, the matter must be done according to party rules and procedures.

“Some people have been asking me when I will resign (as party information chief). Don’t worry, I will act on my promise, (but) it must be organised. I will propose the matter during the upcoming Muda meeting. 

“I will remain with Muda through thick and thin. Even as a regular member, I can still serve (the party),” he added. 

In the runup to the state elections last Saturday, Luqman, who was a first-time candidate, had said that he will give up his party position if he loses the race for the Bandar seat. 

The seat saw a three-cornered fight between Luqman, Perikatan Nasional candidate Ahmad Shah Muhamed and Barisan Nasional’s Armi Irzan Mohd. 

Securing 8,438 votes, Ahmad Shah from PAS claimed the seat with a 2,364-vote majority over Armi Irzan. 

Luqman, who obtained 372 votes as the youth-based party’s sole candidate in Terengganu, lost his deposit, a similar fate suffered by the rest of Muda’s candidates during the state elections. 

The former special functions officer (strategy) to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is the second hopeful from the party to receive the least votes, with Perai candidate Vikneswary Harikrishnan garnering only 253 votes. — August 16, 2023
