KUALA LUMPUR – Approximately 16 schools have been selected to participate in the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) programme, themed Environmental Challenge, this year.

The programme was launched last week by UMW Toyota Motor in collaboration with the Education Ministry as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme.

Its executive marketing director, Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain, said the selected schools will need to develop technological sustainability solutions for the community, with a focus on environmental protection for the benefit of future generations.

“At Toyota, we firmly believe that we are more than just an automotive brand. We have been contributing to environmental sustainability efforts for the past 22 years.

“The Toyota Eco Youth Programme reflects this unwavering commitment by inspiring our future leaders to become responsible stewards of the environment.

“Through this initiative, we aim to empower young minds towards environmental consciousness and proactively shape a sustainable future for our planet.

“With the TEY programme, we are honoured to offer students the tools they need to make a difference in their communities and beyond,” Shamsor said.

Also present at the launch were the deputy director of the Education Ministry’s sports, co-curricular, and arts division, Ithnin Mahadi; and UMWT’s financial controller, Masahiro Nishi.

“Our partnership with UMW Toyota Motor for the Toyota Eco Youth programme enables us to achieve our objectives of encouraging students to implement environmentally friendly activities and fostering a conducive school environment.

“The TEY challenge will provide these young participants with invaluable experience that will prepare them to handle broader and more difficult issues as they grow older.”

“At the Education Ministry, we look forward to working with UMW Toyota and other partners to help our nation’s youth become responsible environmental stewards, thereby shaping a greener and more sustainable future for our nation and planet.”

The TEY 2023/2024 inter-school competition will feature teams nominated by their respective state education departments, each consisting of four students and one teacher adviser.

TEY participants will have the opportunity to win a prize pool of up to RM77,000 in cash.

Since the program’s inception in 2001, UMW Toyota said it has spent over RM7 million to organise it. – August 22, 2023
