TikTok partners with govt to curb 3R content

It pledges to monitor, take action against royalty, race, religion content that violate local laws, says Fahmi Fadzil

KUALA LUMPUR – Social media platform TikTok has agreed to provide its full cooperation in monitoring and taking action against 3R (royalty, race, and religion) content posted on its site, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil. 

The minister said this following a meeting with TikTok representatives and Commercial Crimes Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf earlier today. 

Attorney-General’s Chambers prosecution division head Datuk Manoj Kurup and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din were also present at the meeting.

“The ministry and the government defend citizens’ rights to free speech. However, social media content that violates local laws cannot be allowed, including those that touch on 3R issues or threaten public order and safety. 

“Through the discussion (during the meeting), TikTok gave its full commitment to more efficiently monitor and take action against such content, in line with the TikTok Community Guidelines,” Fahmi said in a Facebook post today. 

Earlier this month, Fahmi said that the freedom of the press and speech guaranteed in Malaysia does not equate to freedom to slander, spread misinformation, or touch on 3R issues. 

He said this when asked to comment on restrictions imposed by the MCMC against private news agency TV Pertiwi, whose portal was blocked two days after its TikTok account was banned. 

Previously, Fahmi had stressed the need for a coordinated unit between law enforcement agencies, including the MCMC, police, and social media platform providers, to deal with 3R issues. – August 28, 2023
