Police postpone Muhyiddin probe over political ‘fatwa’

Tan Sri Razarudin Husin said Muhyiddin's statement will be recorded next Tuesday (September 12), instead of Monday (September 11) as initially scheduled.

KUALA LUMPUR — Police have slightly postponed their questioning of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over his political “fatwa” issued while campaigning in Johor Bahru recently.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husin said Muhyiddin’s statement will be recorded next Tuesday (September 12), instead of Monday (September 11) as initially scheduled.

“(Muhyiddin) requested for the postponement as he has some unavoidable matters to attend to,” Razarudin informed reporters when met at the Royal Malaysian Police College Kuala Lumpur.

Former prime minister Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, was previously expected to give his statement to police next Monday at his office in the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) building here.

Police investigations ensued after reports were lodged against Muhyiddin for deeming it “haram” to vote for rival Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Pulai candidate in Saturday’s by-election.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 505 of the Penal Code relating to statements conducing to public mischief and Section 234 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1997 for the misuse of online networks.

On Monday, Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar slammed Muhyiddin’s “fatwa” proclamation, cautioning that such statements would only serve to “punish” those with opposing views.

He also said that the tendency to issue directives without proper guidance will lead to misunderstandings in society and violate the sanctity of religious teachings. — September 7, 2023
