[OFFICIAL] Pakatan’s Nazri wins Simpang Jeram by-election

Amanah man gets 13,844 votes, Perikatan’s Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya receives 10,330

8:43 PM MYT

JOHOR BARU – Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Nazri Abdul Rahman has emerged as the winner of the Simpang Jeram by-election.

According to the Election Commission’s official results, the 56-year-old Amanah candidate had garnered a total of 13,844 votes, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) contender Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya received 10,330 votes. Independent candidate S. Jeganathan only managed to garner 311 ballots.

Jeganathan also lost his deposit as his 311 votes only constituted 1.27% of the ballots today.

This is in contrast to last year’s state election where the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub garnered 8,749 votes and won the state seat with a 2,399-vote majority in a four-cornered fight against PN, Barisan Nasional and Pejuang candidates.

The turnout for the by-election today stands at 60.85% (24,571) of the constituency’s electorate.

According to the Election Commission, there were a total of 24,485 valid votes, 74 rejected ballots and 12 unreturned ones.

Earlier today, 61 polling centres with 362 streams simultaneously opened at 8am for both the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections. Of these, 47 polling centres were located in the Pulai constituency, with the remaining 14 in Simpang Jeram. All polling centres closed at 6pm.

Both by-elections featured three-cornered contests, with candidates from PH and PN, as well as independents, vying for victory. – September 9, 2023
