Proton recalls X90 over ‘thermal incident’ risk

X90 owners will be contacted by their dealers to bring their vehicles in for inspection to see if action is required

KUALA LUMPUR – Proton Holdings Bhd has announced a recall of the Proton X90 after inspections revealed the vehicle to be at risk of a “thermal incident.”

In a statement today, Proton said that issues relating to the grounding connection to the body of the vehicle can cause overheating under certain circumstances.

“After a thorough investigation conducted by a team of product experts from Proton and Geely (Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group), an issue has been identified regarding the grounding connection to the body of the vehicle.

“This can cause overheating in the connecting area when a continuous large current passes through it and can result in a thermal incident due to its proximity to the sound proofing material.”

Proton added that all X90 owners will be contacted individually by their dealers to bring their vehicles in for inspection, noting that if required, remedial action will be taken by the service centre to eliminate any thermal risk.

The national carmaker also said that it has implemented countermeasures by enhancing supplier process control and incoming inspections on the X90’s production line.

“Proton would like to confirm the mild hybrid (48V) battery used by the X90 is not a source for the incident,” it added.

Last month, a video of fire damage inside an X90 made the rounds on social media, with netizens questioning if the fire was related to the vehicle’s 48V hybrid battery.

Launched in May, the model marked Proton’s entry into the new energy vehicle market as it was the brand’s first mild hybrid electric vehicle. – September 13, 2023
