KUALA LUMPUR — Men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong, women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei, and mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai all recorded their first semifinal appearances of the season at the Hong Kong Open today.

Tze Yong did not face any trouble in dismantling Magnus Johannesen from Denmark at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon.

The world number 20 took down the Danish player 21-18, 21-12 in 46 minutes for his first semifinal appearance this year.

The national shuttler will next take on Jonatan Christie from Indonesia tomorrow, whom he last defeated in the second round of the Australian Open last month.

In the women’s singles, professional player Jin Wei surprised world number nine Han Yue from China.

The world number 34 needed three sets to defeat Han Yue 12-21, 21-17, 21-18.

The two-time junior world champion will now take on world number 17 Zhang Yiman from China tomorrow for a slot in the final on Sunday.

In the mixed doubles, Soon Huat-Shevon defeated Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari from Indonesia 21-10, 21-18.

The independent pair will take on Hong Kong pair Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet, who are ranked 23rd in the world, for a place in the final on Sunday. — September 15, 2023
