Nur Aiman chooses Le Tour de Langkawi over Asian Games

The 24-year-old cyclist turns down the Asian Games opportunity for his lifelong dream of competing in LTdL, eyes coveted white jersey

9:00 AM MYT

BUKIT JALIL — National road cycling team member Mohammad Nur Aiman Rosli has made a passionate decision, turning down the chance to compete in the Hangzhou Asian Games to fulfil his lifelong dream of participating in the prestigious Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL).

Ever since he was a 14-year-old aspiring cyclist, Aiman harboured the dream of racing in the LTdL.

Despite being offered a coveted spot on the track cycling team bound for Hangzhou, where he was asked to participate in the Madison event, Aiman chose to decline the offer.

“I’ve never raced in LTdL before this and I’m eager to see how can I perform in a ProSeries event like this.

“I’ve been to the (Jakarta/Palembang) Asian Games in 2018 and took part in the omnium event, that is why I chose to skip the Asiad this time round,” said the 24-year-old.

National team coach Mohd Yusuf Abdul Nasir has recognised Aiman’s potential, singling him out as one of two riders in contention for the coveted white jersey for the Best Asian Rider category.

The other contender is the team captain, Muhammad Zawawi Azman.

“I will give my best in every stage of the race. If a particular stage is crucial for me, I won’t hesitate to instigate a breakaway if needed.

“If Zawawi has a shot at the white jersey, I will do everything to support him.

“My primary target is to secure the white jersey from the very first stage, as it is important for all riders.

“The route for the first stage is pretty much flat, so I’ll aim for a breakaway. Steep climbs are not my forte.”

Aiman also said that the battle for the white jersey remains wide open between him and his teammates.

The first stage on Saturday will cover 187.4km from Kerteh to Kuala Terengganu.

It marks the beginning of the journey encompassing a total of eight stages in the prestigious Le Tour de Langkawi. — September 19, 2023
