RTD announces special operation against commercial vehicles after fatal Putrajaya crash

Extensive operation to target those exceeding allowable loads, breaking safety laws

11:31 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Starting next week, the Road Transport Department (RTD) will conduct a large-scale special operation against commercial vehicles, particularly lorries ferrying sand.

Its Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations), Aedy Fadli Ramli, said that it is in response to an accident involving a sand-laden lorry that crashed into 14 vehicles in Putrajaya on Wednesday, killing two people.

“Instructions have been issued to all state RTD directors to conduct special operations on commercial vehicles carrying excess loads that violate the laws and may endanger the safety of other road users.

“The special operations will be led by the state RTD directors. “The RTD headquarters, particularly the Enforcement Division, has been instructed to closely monitor these operations and submit a comprehensive report to the RTD’s top management and the Transport Ministry,” he said.

He said this last night at a press conference following the RTD enforcement operation at the Awan Besar toll plaza.

At 10.15am on Wednesday, two motorcyclists were killed and seven were injured when a sand-laden lorry ploughed into 14 vehicles at KM5.7 of Jalan Persiaran Utara, Puchong-bound.

He said the Inspection and Safety Audit report related to the accident is expected to be submitted to the Land Public Transport Agency on Monday for further action.

However, he stated that the report’s contents cannot be disclosed and that the RTD is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the accident as instructed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He also said that the RTD has just received the accident report from the Royal Malaysia Police. – September 23, 2023
