Pelangai by-election: candidates pledge focus on development, youth

Three-way contest features BN’s Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, PN’s Kasim Samat, independent Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli, each with unique priorities

2:40 PM MYT

BENTONG – Aspects of development, as well as the welfare and needs of the younger generation, will be among the priorities of Pelangai by-election Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Amizar Abu Adam.

Amizar, 50, said that in addition to carrying on the late incumbent Datuk Seri Johari Harun’s development plans and agenda, he will include youth issues in his manifesto.

“I want to focus on the younger generation because many of the development programmes, activities, and opportunities that we can provide are aimed at empowering youth in the constituency,” he told reporters today after the nomination of candidates at the Felda Kemasul community hall here.

The Pelangai by-election is a three-way contest between Amizar, Perikatan Nasional candidate Kasim Samat, and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli.

In this regard, Kasim, 63, said that if given the mandate by the people, he would like to bring up the issue of development, particularly roads in Pelangai, which, according to him, have lagged behind other constituencies.

At the same time, his experience as a former secondary school and vocational college teacher gives him confidence in gaining youth support.

Haslihelmy, 36, intends to advocate for the interests of the younger generation, particularly the second and third Felda generations in the Pelangai constituency.

“Even though I do not have large machinery, I will prove that we can mobilise efforts for victory,” said Haslihelmy, who is using the car symbol.

The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for October 7, while early voting is on October 3.

A total of 16,456 voters will be eligible to cast their ballots in the by-election including 36 police personnel and three overseas postal voters

From the total, there are 7,639 voters aged between 18 and 39 in the constituency, based on the EC’s electoral rolls statistics. – September 23, 2023
