KUALA LUMPUR – The lorry driver, who slammed into 14 other vehicles last Wednesday in Putrajaya that resulted in the deaths of two motorcyclists, has pleaded not guilty to reckless driving today.

Mohammad Izzatul Shafik Mozahari has claimed trial after the charge – pertaining to the incident at KM5.7 of Jalan Persiaran Utara – was read out in front of Putrajaya magistrate Aima Nabila Muhammad Azhar. 

According to the charge sheet, 29-year-old Izzatul was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 in relation to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Upon conviction, he faces not less than two years and not more than 10 years in prison, and is fined between RM5,000 and RM20,000. It also states that the court shall order particulars of any conviction under this section to be endorsed on any driving licence held by the person convicted.

At 10.15am last Wednesday, two motorcyclists were killed and seven were injured when a sand-laden lorry ploughed into 14 vehicles, including a police outrider motorcycle.

The lorry driver had tested negative for drugs and had no record of traffic offences. – September 25, 2023
