Diving queen Pandelela triumphs with bronze in Hangzhou

This is her second medal at the games, having secured another bronze in the 10m synchro event alongside Nur Dhabitah Sabri

7:19 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – National diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong rose to the occasion once more, delivering a bronze medal in the women’s 10m platform event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

It was certainly redemption for the two-time Olympic medalist, whose last outing at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games didn’t go well due to an injury that forced her to skip the event.

The 30-year-old Sarawakian displayed consistency from start to finish, tallying a total of 280.50 points over five dives in the final at the Hangzhou Aquatic Sports Arena today.

China’s teenage duo, Olympic gold medalist Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi, secured gold and silver, as expected, with scores of 438.20 and 435.65, respectively.

This is the second medal contributed by Pandelela for the Malaysian camp through diving, as she had already secured a bronze in the 10m synchro event alongside Nur Dhabitah Sabri on Saturday.

This is her fourth podium appearance at the Asian Games, having won silver and bronze medals in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in the 10m synchro event and the 10m platform event.

She also clinched bronze in the 10m synchro event at the 2014 edition in Incheon, South Korea.

Malaysia’s hopes of adding another diving medal will be focused on Ooi Tze Liang, who is competing in the men’s 3m springboard event at 7.30pm (Malaysian time) today. – October 3, 2023
