Eain Yow strikes gold for Malaysia in Hangzhou

Malaysia punches through its 27-medal target, with a silver in karate, and a bronze in archery as well

KUALA LUMPUR – National squash player Ng Eain Yow delivered a formidable performance, securing Malaysia’s 28th medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Eain Yow defeated India’s world number 10 ranked player, Saurav Ghosal, 3-1 to clinch the gold medal in the men’s singles category final at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Park Expo Center Squash venue today.

In a thrilling 70-minute-long match that was decided in a four-set battle, the 25-year-old started the first set with a 9-11 defeat in a lengthy 22-minute match.

Eain Yow, who recently won bronze in the men’s team event, fought hard in the second set, defeating Saurav 11-9 in an intense 20-minute competition.

He continued his winning momentum, sealing the victory in style in straight sets, 11-5 and 11-7, in a total of 25 minutes to secure his maiden gold in the category.

Eain Yow’s victory marks Malaysia’s fourth gold medal in the men’s singles category, after Ong Beng Hee’s wins in the 2002 & 2006 editions, and Mohd Azlan Iskandar’s win in the 2010 edition.

With today’s gold, the Malaysian squash team has secured one gold medal in the women’s singles event, one gold medal in the women’s team event, one silver in the mixed doubles event, and one bronze in the men’s team event.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian contingent officially achieved the 27-medal target set for the Asiad.

Earlier, karate exponent Lovelly Anne Robberth won silver in the women’s individual kata final at the Linping Sports Centre Gymnasium, after narrowly falling to Japan’s defending Asian Games champion, Kiyou Shimizu, with a total of 39.8-42.6 points.

The trio of Juwaidi Mazuki, Alang Ariff Aqil Muhammad Ghaz, and Syafiq Md Ariffin brought home a bronze in archery after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chang Cheng Wei, Chen Chieh Lun, and Yang Cheng Jui 228-208 at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre.

Malaysia stands 13th in the Asian Games medal standings with a total of 28 medals (5 gold, 5 silver, and 13 bronze). – October 5, 2023
