Anwar arrives in UAE to strengthen bilateral ties

Anwar and the UAE president highlighted their mutual interest in collaborating to establish an extensive economic partnership

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is set to strengthen its bilateral ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by seeking new collaboration opportunities rooted in their mutual dedication to sustainability.

This came after a meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that took place at the Qasr Al Shati Palace in Abu Dhabi.

According to a report by the Emirates News Agency, the two leaders evaluated their existing agreements and discussed plans to further boost cooperation between both countries.

Sectors emphasised include the economy, trade and investment, renewable energy, and food security – all of which are in line with both nations’ goals for a “sustainable and prosperous” future.

Anwar and Sheikh Mohamed highlighted their mutual interest in collaborating to establish an extensive economic partnership between the two nations in the near future.

They also discussed recent regional and international developments, while sharing their perspectives on various topics.

In expressing appreciation for the UAE’s warm reception, Anwar also conveyed his desire to expand collaboration with his Middle Eastern counterparts – especially in the economic, investment, and developmental cooperation sectors.

During the meeting, Anwar also conveyed greetings from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah, to Sheikh Mohamed, accompanied by wishes for the UAE’s continued progress and prosperity.

Sheikh Mohamed returned the greeting, while extending his wishes for Malaysia’s development, as well as its people.

The meeting was also attended by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, advisor for special affairs at the Presidential Court Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, and Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei.

Also present were Investment Minister Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi and State Minister Ahmed bin Ali Mohammed Al Sayegh.

Delegates representing Malaysia included Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Zambry Kadir, as well as Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

The UAE stands as Malaysia’s top investor from the West Asian region, while being second among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.

The nation has invested about US$400 billion, nearly RM1.9 billion, in numerous manufacturing ventures in Malaysia, thus far. – October 6, 2023
