Malaysia Airlines offers 55% discount to aid stranded MYAirline flyers

National carrier the latest to extend help to passengers of airline that has suspended operations

4:18 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airlines has extended a helping hand to MYAirline’s passengers after the low cost carrier’s sudden suspension of its operations earlier today due to mounting financial woes.

In a Facebook post, Malaysia Airlines said that MYAirline passengers with an urgent need to travel can visit the former’s ticketing offices to make bookings with a 55% discount on their fares for affected routes.

Noting that travellers will have to present their MYAirline tickets, Malaysia Airlines said that the offer only applies to those with MYAirline tickets for travel up to November this year.

“Malaysia Airlines invites the management of MYAirline to work together in reallocating their passengers on our flights where available,” the national carrier said.

“We are here to assist passengers in getting to their destination seamlessly and safely.”

Previously, Malaysia Airlines’ parent company, Malaysia Aviation Group, said it would reallocate passengers on its flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi and Bangkok.

The flag carrier is joined by several other airlines in its offer of aid, with AirAsia having extended to MYAirline passengers a 50% discount on base fares exclusively for certain routes.

The base fare, AirAsia said, is for a one-way fare excluding airport tax, the Mavcom fee, fuel surcharge, and other applicable fees.

AirAsia Aviation Group chief executive Bo Lingam said the offer was made because it deeply empathises with all affected MYAirline passengers and their staff.

Batik Air has also offered special fixed one-way fares on selected routes from Kuala Lumpur, including to Penang at RM129, Langkawi (RM159), Kuching (RM199), as well as to Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport and Kota Kinabalu at RM299.

Affected passengers are required to attach a copy of their MYAirline tickets and make bookings through Batik Air’s website.

Travellers have expressed frustration over MYAirline’s sudden suspension of operations, with many bemoaning the inconvenience caused, as no prior warning was provided to passengers who had already purchased tickets with the low-cost airline. – October 12, 2023
