KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) today announced the appointment of Indonesian Jeffer Rosobin as the new Head of Juniors.

He replaces Datuk Misbun Sidek, who did not accept BAM’s offer to extend his contract until the end of the year. 

“Jeffer boasts a strong track record in nurturing young talents. Notably, he coached Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to victory at the 2017 World Junior Championships. 

“We believe he possesses the necessary qualities to lead the junior squad and work effectively with Rexy,” said BAM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria at a press conference after its council meeting today. 

BAM is currently working on Jeffer’s visa and is targeting for the 47-year-old to start work on November 1. 

Meanwhile, Norza said the national body had drawn up a shortlist of a few candidates to replace Misbun and discussed them with Rexy Mainaky, the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) coaching director. 

“All the key performance indicators for juniors and seniors are under Rexy, so his input is key in picking a coach who is qualified and can work well with him. With his input, we approved Jeffer as the new Head of Juniors.  

“I’m sure Rexy is familiar with Jeffer’s achievements and performance, which is why he recommended him,” said Norza. 

The national badminton body also officially announced Rexy as ABM coaching director. 

“He will oversee both the senior and junior divisions of the national team, ensuring a consistent coaching philosophy across all departments. He will also facilitate the seamless transition of the junior athletes to the senior squad,” said Norza. — October 14, 2023
