Denmark Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik march on, other doubles falter

Mixed doubles pair Tang Jie-Ee Wei and women’s doubles pair Hoo-Chiew Sien failed to progress

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik progressed to the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open today.

They took on three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia at the Jyske Bank Arena in Odense.

The world number four pair, who defeated the Indonesians to claim the world title last year, needed three sets to dispatch the veteran pair 16-21, 21-5, 21-15 in 41 minutes.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will clash for a spot in the semifinals against He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu of China tomorrow.

In mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei went down to world number five pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.

The world number nine Malaysian duo were dispatched in straight sets 21-15, 21-12 in 38 minutes.

In the women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien put up a fight against higher-ranked Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam of Hong Kong.

The world number 34 pair came close to an upset in the third set but they ultimately succumbed to a 15-21, 21-17, 20-22 to the number 22 ranked Hong Kong duo. – October 19, 2023
