Like third world war: MyCARE manager in Gaza shares dire situation

Ziad Shehada says they ‘are not okay’ as basic needs limited, no safe place to take shelter

6:00 PM MYT

JOHOR BAHRU – “Brothers and sisters, all around the world. I am sorry to inform you, that we are not okay.”

After three days without news, Humanitarian Care Malaysia Bhd (MyCARE) Gaza manager Ziad Shehada posted a video on his Facebook yesterday, updating the latest situation in the Gaza Strip.

He said there was constant movement of people on the street, either to secure basic needs for their families or seek refuge.

According to him the main bakery where the Gaza residents secured their bread was destroyed by the recent airstrikes.

“Every day my children have to queue for three to five hours just to secure a bag of bread. No clean water and what is left is polluted water and I have been trying to find clean water for my sick child,” he said, adding that he could not move anywhere as there was no petrol.

He said he used an old radio belonging to his grandparents to keep updated on the situation.

Distracted by the sound of an explosion, Ziad later said: “There is no safe place in Gaza”, adding that the bombings heightened after 10pm until morning, occurring every five minutes.

“…this is the worst situation…like a third world war. They destroyed hospitals, mosques and people,” he added.

Ziad also said MyCARE had contacted some of their suppliers to be ready with supplies of necessities as soon as the Rafah crossing is opened, so that aid can be immediately provided to the Gaza residents.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a bombing on a church in the Gaza Strip last night, Abeer Z. Barakat, a Palestinian activist penned her thoughts which were posted on her Facebook page, saying: “This is not a war against Islam but all Palestinians, regardless of what their religion are.”

According to her, about 400 Christian Gazans were taking refuge in the church, which is the third oldest in the world, when it was bombed by the Zionist forces.

“Do you still think this is a war against Islam? Or would you justify…that the church is a human shield too?” she said.

The clashes in Palestine between Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, and the Israeli regime since October 7 have left thousands dead and injured on both sides. – October 20, 2023
