KUALA LUMPUR – The Dewan Rakyat was in an uproar this afternoon after Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Langkawi-PN) made some lewd remarks about Teresa Kok (Seputeh-PH).

Suhaimi was about to end his debate on the national budget in Parliament today while inviting people to see penguins at the Underwater World Langkawi when Kok suddenly interjected, asking the Langkawi MP if one could wear a pair of shorts to the beach on the island.

He responded: “To YB Seputeh, it is fine even if you come without wearing anything,” followed by bursts of laughter from the male MPs sitting behind Suhaimi.

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Alice Lau then tried to calm the situation saying, “Enough, the time (for Suhaimi’s slot) has ended,” to which, Suhaimi pointed out that Kok brought up the shorts first.

Chong Zhemin (Kampar-PH) stood up to defend Seputeh and demanded Suhaimi retract his remark, saying that “not wearing anything” means being naked in public places, which is illegal.

Suhaimi retorted: “I forgot to mention that I want to imagine Seputeh (Kok) coming to Langkawi without any clothes on.”

Lau stressed again: “Enough, the time has ended.”

Kok also fired back, accusing Suhaimi of being “obscene” and being dirty-minded.

This resulted in several MPs loudly disagreeing with Suhaimi’s jibes, to the point that Lau muted their microphones.

Last month, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said his ministry received complaints from non-Muslim tourists after they were restricted from wearing shorts and drinking alcohol in Langkawi.

On a separate matter, Suhaimi said today that his name was recently mentioned in a video on social media and that he was one of several Perikatan Nasional MPs who would support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said he has no problem supporting Anwar if the government approves the construction of a railway from Kuah to Alor Star and an airport in Kulim, Kedah.

“Also (if Anwar approves) the allocation that we have been waiting for. Insya-Allah, if these are approved, I have no problem supporting the prime minister.” – October 26, 2023
