Cheah Yee See calls KL Masters win a farewell gift for partner Peng Soon

The latter is now 35-years-old and feels that age is catching up with him

KUALA LUMPUR – Cheah Yee See sees her win with partner Chan Peng Soon at the Kuala Lumpur Masters today as a parting gift for the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist.

Facing off against Thailand’s mixed doubles pair of Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Phataimas Muenwong, the Malaysians needed three games to win 21-9, 17-21, 21-10 at the Titiwangsa Stadium.

“I’m very proud to win this title at home with Yee See, even though it is only a Superseries 100 event,” said Peng Soon.

“The first set was easy for us, so they changed their strategy in the second. We tried to come back, but it was too late,” said the 27-year-old Yee See, who added that this win might be her farewell gift to Peng Soon.

The 35-year-old Peng Soon added that he is taking things day by day, as he feels age is catching up with him.

“Yee See and I have changed our mindset going forward. We are taking things tournament by tournament.

“We want to try our hardest and do our best; win or lose is a different story.

“I’m starting to feel my body ache when I have hard training days, and I plan to retire next year.

“I will play on until the Olympic qualifying period ends (in April),” said Peng Soon, who partnered with Goh Liu Ying to win their Olympic silver medal.

The KL Masters win is Peng Soon and Yee See’s first title since winning the Russian Open in 2017. – November 5, 2023
