[WATCH] Deepavali: a festival of lights but not for all

We explore struggles faced by underprivileged families; a moment to remember that kindness is the festival’s true spirit

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LANGAT — It is heartwarming to hear about the beautiful Deepavali traditions and celebrations; however, it is also important to be aware of the challenges faced by underprivileged families during this festive season.

In conjunction with Deepavali this year, Scoop.my had the opportunity to hear about the heart-wrenching situation of two families who are struggling to make this auspicious season a joyous one.

Kalithas Chelliah and Seetha Letchumy, an elderly couple, began living in deprivation when 72-year-old Kalithas, the family’s sole provider, fell critically ill, halting the family business and resulting in a financial crisis.

Their struggle heightened when their only child chose not to support them, leaving them alone in Teluk Estate, Telok Panglima Garang.

Meanwhile, in Morib, 62-year-old Saraswathy Shedeven recounts her past when she sustained her livelihood running a tailoring shop.

Unfortunately, her business took a severe hit when the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the globe, resulting in her having to let go of her shop.

The grandmother of seven now accepts tailor orders for clothing from her weathered home, where she also cares for her husband, who has mobility issues due to old age.

The stories of Kalithas, Seetha, and Saraswathy emphasise the importance of compassion and empathy.

It is a time to remember that not everyone is fortunate and that many people face difficulties and hardships.

Reaching out to those in need and spreading kindness are powerful ways to honour the true meaning of Deepavali. – November 12, 2023
