Govt to deliberate on raising local white rice ceiling price: Mat Sabu

Agriculture Ministry to evaluate potential impact on all stakeholders, ensure all parties benefit from decision

4:53 PM MYT

IPOH – The government will study the proposal to raise the ceiling price of local white rice (LWR), said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

He said that the Paddy and Rice Regulatory Division’s (KPB) study on the proposal will examine all aspects to ensure that all parties benefit from the decision.

“The Finance Ministry, Economy Ministry, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will examine the requirements and how to implement them.

“This study is also necessary due to suggestions from various parties, because the price set has not changed since 2008,” he said today at the Rahmah Sales booths in conjunction with the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen’s Day (HPPNK) 2023 at Dataran Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah.

KPB director-general Datuk Azman Mahmood said yesterday that the LWR ceiling price should be raised to RM3.20 per kg, up from the current RM2.60 per kg, to protect the future of all parties involved in the food production chain, particularly paddy farmers.

He also explained that raising the LWR ceiling price is critical to preventing local rice dumping, as manufacturers are no longer interested in purchasing rice due to low prices.

Commenting on HPPNK 2023, Mohamad said that he was confident that more than 500,000 visitors would attend the three-day event, starting November 10.

“I am confident that the target will be met, based on the fact that the total attendance up to noon (today) is 488,662 visitors, including 452,647 physical attendees and 36,015 online,” he said.

He said that the presence of visitors from various groups demonstrates that the event is very beneficial to the people, not only for getting basic necessities but also for learning more about agriculture.

“Their presence demonstrates their support for the government’s commitment to appreciating the services and contributions of farmers, breeders, and fishermen; national heroes who always strive to ensure a sufficient supply of food for the country,” he said. – November 12, 2023
