MYAirline staff file claims for RM200,000 in unpaid salaries with labour office

Employees received electronic payslips but money not deposited into accounts, says union boss

5:48 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Twenty-four MYAirline employees filed their claims for RM200,000 in unpaid salaries at the Labour Department in Bangi today.

They were accompanied by officials from the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), who said the outstanding amounts were for two months, namely, September and October this year, the Buletin TV3 portal reports.

MYAirline suspended operations abruptly on October 12, citing financial troubles after unexpectedly losing an investor.

MTUC secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor told media present that the airline’s employees received their payslips electronically but their salaries were not deposited into their accounts.

He said the workers had “no choice” but to file their claims at the labour office today.

“This need not happen. It is the right of workers to be paid their salaries. The company should have paid them.”

According to Kamarul, the labour office will also be meeting with the MYAirline management on November 24 regarding staff salaries.

On October 31, a group of MYAirline employees lodged a police report in Sepang against the company over their unpaid salaries.

The troubled airline has had its air service licence suspended by regulators, while the Human Resources Ministry has urged staff to promptly file outstanding salary claims with the Labour Department.

The airline’s management, meanwhile, has said it is in the advanced stages of negotiations with two potential investors on reviving operations. – November 14, 2023
