KUALA LUMPUR – A PAS MP’s claims that DAP leaders are related to a former Singapore prime minister and a former communist party leader appeared to set the tone for debates in the Dewan Rakyat today, prompting verbal wars and distracting them from substantial issues.
Following an earlier spat today between DAP’s R.S.N. Rayer (Jelutong-PH) and the PAS lawmaker who made those claims, Siti Masutra Muhammad (Kepala Batas-PN), Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (Pengkalan Chepa-PN) took the opportunity to allege DAP’s involvement in “communist” events in the past.
While debating Supply Bill 2024 at the committee level for the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry, Marzuk asked the government for its views on a 2019 gathering of the now-defunct Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) supporters, which was attended by then Sg Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew.
“What is the government’s view on certain leaders who, on December 1, 2019, attended a CPM gathering in Selangor? Will this affect foreign investors’perceptions of our national peace?” Mazuk, of PAS, said.
Alleging that the gathering was a supposed attempt at reviving the communist party, Marzuk noted that Liu had given a speech at the event.
“Without any shame nor an apology, he (Liu) attended the event and even gave a speech at the gathering of former members of the CPM,” Marzuk said.
Liu, who quit DAP in June this year, had his statement recorded by the police on December 9, 2019. The event was reportedly to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai Peace Accord that ended the Communist insurgency in Malaysia.
Marzuk said he was using the same reasoning as Rayer, who had earlier voiced his concerns over potential backlash to the Malaysia-Singapore trade because of another PAS MP’s claims that associated ex-Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew with communists.
Rayer had not mentioned the name of the MP he was referring to, but Siti Mastura immediately interjected and cited the Standing Order against Rayer.
Yesterday, Siti Mastura’s statement was recorded at the Bukit Aman police headquarters after police reports were lodged against her for claiming that DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng (Bagan) and his father, party stalwart Lim Kit Siang, were related to the late Lee and long-deceased CPM leader Chin Peng.
She made the claim during a speech at a PAS programme in Kemaman, Terengganu, on November 4, which is available on video.
Guan Eng has since begun steps to take legal action against her by appointing a lawyer.
Malaysian politics, which is largely race-based, has historically seen Malay-Muslim parties often falsely demonising DAP for touting a communist agenda in an ostensible attempt to garner Malay votes.
Marzuk today also dredged up another accusation involving same-sex marriage, citing a politician from a certain party in Penang.
“There are some leaders (who are in) a same-sex marriage that happened in Penang.
“This has tarnished our country’s image as a nation with Islam as its official religion. How can same-sex marriages happen here? This has humiliated and caused much sadness to the Malaysian community,” he added.
In July, then-Wanita DAP chief Chong Eng denied the party’s involvement with a former DAP assemblywoman who married her female partner and whose photos of their wedding in Balik Pulau were shared online.
The unity government, Chong said then, does not support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender agenda. – November 15, 2023
