SAN FRANCISCO – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated Malaysia’s dedication to maintaining a neutral stance in its relations with rival superpowers, the US and China, with the aim of safeguarding the economic interests of the nation.

Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions between these influential nations, Anwar emphasised that Malaysia’s impartiality is aimed at ensuring the country’s continued development and prosperity.

Anwar clarified that Malaysia’s engagement with China does not signify a pivot, despite existing disagreements with the US on certain global issues.

“When asked about our relationship with China, I emphasised that, as an independent and sovereign nation, our approach should be to maintain relationships with both the United States and China for economic reasons, attracting investment, and fostering revitalised growth,” Anwar said.

He further addressed the concerns of business and investment, highlighting the importance of recognising global issues, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, as they can significantly impact the world.

Anwar was speaking to reporters after a meeting with representatives from technology giants such as Google, Enovix Cooperation, Microsoft and Tik Tok, among others.

Some of the participants had sought clarification on Malaysia’s stance towards China.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the 30th Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting in San Francisco from November 14 to 17.

In presenting Malaysia’s credentials and agenda to the business community, the prime minister underscored the nation’s political stability and clear policies.

He also pointed to Malaysia’s commitment to energy transition and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

According to Bernama, Anwar also moved to provide confidence among the investors there regarding approval processes in Malaysia.

Among those present at the meeting was Google president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat, Enovix chief operating officer Ajay Marathe, Microsoft Asia president Ahmed Mazhari and TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew.

The San Francisco Bay area is home to the famed Silicon Valley, and hosts a slew of Fortune 500 companies at the forefront of development in artificial intelligence, biotech, software, green technology and social media. – November 16, 2023
