Former J-Kom chief Agus to give press conference tonight

Sudden step-down follows criticism of dept’s failures, viral clip of flirty video call between two men

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Community Communications Department (J-Kom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff will give a press conference tonight, following his sudden resignation from his post.

A letter issued by law firm Faizal Rahman & Co this afternoon has invited the media to a press conference at Hotel Tenera in Bandar Baru Bangi, tonight.

Earlier today, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed Agus’ resignation and that he is no longer linked to either the government or the agency.

Agus announced his resignation yesterday to several media channels, reportedly saying that the decision was made following an offer for a different job and not due to pressure from any parties.

Of late, J-Kom, which is tasked with disseminating government information, has been criticised as ineffective, and opposition MPs have suggested it be disbanded to save RM13 million allocated to its budget.

Additionally, Agus’s resignation follows a leaked three-minute clip of a video call of two men in a flirtatious conversation that has gone viral online.

The clip led to Wanita PKR exco member Rozy Razit calling for an investigation, while also denouncing the leak as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing the unity government.

Agus began his duties as J-Kom director-general at the Prime Minister’s Office in February. The department was previously known as the Special Affairs Department before it was rebranded to J-Kom in 2020.

The establishment of J-Kom was aimed at creating two-way communication between the government and the people by channelling accurate, authentic and reliable information to the masses.

Fahmi, who was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders’ Week 2023 in California, United States, said steps are being taken to replace Agus as soon as possible. – November 17, 2023
