KUALA LUMPUR – The police have received a total of 19 reports over an alleged bomb threat sent to public, private and international schools nationwide via email, said top cop Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

He said the content of the emails sent were similar to a previous incident on November 12 in Jamaica where such threats were sent to 70 schools using the same email service provider.

“Investigations are underway to determine if the incidents in Malaysia are related to the events in Jamaica.

“(The incident overseas) is believed to have been orchestrated by a troubled individual who might have experienced abuse during his youth and lacks attention, but has technical software knowledge to protect his identity,” Razarudin said in a statement today.

He added that the emails received by the schools here were sent from an account using the name “taktstorer”, a German term meaning “disturber of the peace” from the beeble.com email service provider. 

Police investigations so far, Razarudin said, have confirmed that the bomb threat was a hoax, with no evidence found to indicate the existence of a bomb at any of the schools’ premises. 

“The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 on the improper use of network facilities.” 

Seven reports were received from schools in Selangor, five from Kuala Lumpur, three from Johor, two from Penang as well as one each in Perak and Negri Sembilan. 

Previously, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said in response to a series of threatening emails, police bomb squads conducted extensive searches in schools across districts in the state and found the entire incident to be a hoax. 

Hussein also said the email in question was disseminating false information designed to instigate fear among schools and parents. 

Earlier today, Scoop reported that a number of international schools allegedly received security threats, leading to certain institutions contacting police and evacuating their premises. 

According to a circular issued by one of the affected schools in the Klang Valley, it closed for the day as a precautionary measure after discussing the situation with other affected schools and the police. – November 21, 2023
