Open tender for Penang airport expansion to favour local players, says MoT

Malaysia Airports to include certain clauses in tender to assist local industry players

12:23 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Certain clauses to assist local industry players will be included in Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) open tender document on the Penang International Airport upgrading and expansion project.

The Transport Ministry in a written parliamentary reply said MAHB remains committed to having an open tender where local players are welcome to join.

“MAHB has held a series of discussions with the Penang Development Corporation on how the airport project will bring added value to the state and local industry players.

“Another workshop will be conducted in December for the same purpose.”

The ministry added that MAHB is currently focused on design and build aspects while the following phase will include facilities and technology development.

“By then, MAHB will be more active in holding engagement sessions with tech companies and SMEs in Bayan Lepas (Penang).”

In March, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the expansion of Penang International Airport announced in Budget 2023 would be funded by MAHB, and the tender for the project will be called in two months’ time.

“The tender for the first phase of the expansion project will be called in two months’ time by MAHB so that work can commence this year. We expect the project to be completed within three to four years.

“Once completed, the airport capacity will be increased to 12 million passengers per annum from the current 6.5 million passengers per annum.”

Penang International Airport is the third-busiest airport in Malaysia, and it was last upgraded in 2013. – November 23, 2023
