Bersatu supreme council reject Muhyiddin’s decision to not defend party presidency

No council member put their name forward as president during an emergency meeting this afternoon

SHAH ALAM – None of the Bersatu supreme council members wanted to run for the presidency and unanimously rejected Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to not defend his top position in the internal polls next year.

A source told Scoop that Muhyiddin’s shocking decision to step back was not accepted during an emergency meeting among the supreme council members this afternoon.

“Every supreme council member was asked if they wanted to run for president. None wanted to do so. It was a consensus to reject Muhyiddin’s decision.”

Could this spell a rejuvenation for Muhyiddin despite speculations of infighting and criticism?

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said today’s emergency meeting of the supreme council saw all leaders present unanimously reject Muhyiddin’s “suggestion” to not defend his post in the party polls next year.

“The supreme council unanimously held that (Muhyiddin’s) leadership is needed by the party, and the country,” Hamzah said in a statement.

The meeting, chaired by deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, was held following Muhyiddn’s announcement earlier today, when he gave his speech at the opening of Bersatu’s 6th annual general assembly.

His announcement was met with strong protests from the assembly floor, and prompted calls for him to stay on and a proposal that the party reintroduce the chairman role for Muhyiddin to fill. – November 24, 2023
