Singapore cops arrest nation’s Silat Federation CEO over financial scandal

SportSG says it is working closely with SSF to ensure athletes continue to get support

4:30 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Singapore sports is marred by a financial scandal involving its Silat Federation after the police arrested the chief executive officer, Sheik Alau’ddin on Saturday for suspected criminal breach of trust.

According to a CNA report, the police confirmed Sheik’s arrest but were unable to share further details as the investigation is ongoing.

“We are unable to disclose further details as investigations are ongoing. Where necessary, the Singapore Silat Federation (SSF) will cooperate with the CAD (Criminal Affairs Department) throughout its investigations,” said the SSF to CNA.

Meanwhile, Sport Singapore (SportSG) said it is aware of the ongoing investigations by the CAD into financial irregularities at the SSF involving its CEO.

“To this end, we are working closely with SSF to safeguard against further financial risks and ensure that Team Singapore Silat athletes continue to be supported in their training needs,” SportSG said.

Earlier this year, the silat national body lodged a police report against its financial director after irregularities relating to salary payments to some of the coaches were uncovered.

With that, a probe was launched when SportSG received feedback alleging that there were irregularities in the national body’s financial practices.

In a statement earlier this year, SportSG discovered that “there was cause for serious concern” over the alleged financial irregularities.

Separately, SSF has taken this opportunity to review its internal processes and strengthen the system.

Sheik, who was crowned world champion in 1990 and 1994, was appointed to the role of national silat coach in 1999 and is a four-time Coach of the Year award winner.

The four-time SEA Games gold medalist was also the recipient of the Public Service Medal in 2000. – November 27, 2023
