COP28 sees 600 Malaysian delegates, largest participation from nation

Environment Ministry’s sec-gen says this shows country’s commitment to address climate change

10:13 PM MYT

DUBAI – The Malaysian delegation for the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) this year has registered the largest participation of 600 delegates, according to the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.

COP28 kicked off today until December 12 at Expo City Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

It is expected to host over 70,000 delegates, including heads of state and world leaders, to build consensus and facilitate progress on climate action among parties, delegates and thousands of non-government organisations, companies, youth groups and other stakeholders.

The Environment Ministry’s secretary-general Ching Thoo Kim said the remarkable turnout underscores the country’s commitment and efforts to contribute meaningfully to the global action on climate change.

“We are honoured to announce the gracious presence of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at the World Climate Action Summit which is scheduled for Friday (tomorrow).

“His majesty will launch the Malaysia Pavilion tomorrow,” Ching said at the briefing on the Malaysia Pavilion at the COP28 venue here.

Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad will also deliver the national statement during the Resume High-Level Segment of COP28.

According to Ching, the Malaysian Pavilion will feature over 60 distinguished speakers, 28-panel discussions, multiple bilateral meetings and cultural performance throughout the conference.

“To our sponsors, members of the advisory and consultative panels and our speakers, you are the backbone of our showcase, telling Malaysia’s climate action story in the most impactful way possible,” he said.

Themed “Going Beyond: Green Growth, Resilient Community, Sustainable Planet”, the Malaysia Pavilion encapsulates the country’s approach to climate and biodiversity issues.

The pavilion serves as a manifestation of collaborative ethos, a core element of Malaysian culture, uniting Malaysian and international thought leaders across public, private, and social sectors. – November 30, 2023
