Govt allocates RM44 mil to Chinese schools, almost double from last year

This covers 417 schools in total, while Tamil schools get RM17.57 mil to cover 164

8:30 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Chinese vernacular schools (SJKC) received RM44.8 million from the government this year as of October 31, the Education Ministry said.

The sum was for the maintenance of 417 schools, and is double the RM26.4 million Putrajaya gave to 375 SJKC last year, the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply dated yesterday.

Of the amount this year, RM14.9 million was for the general maintenance of 186 Chinese schools, and RM29.8 million was for toilet maintenance in 417 schools.

The ministry’s reply was to Cha Kee Chin (Rasah-PH) who asked for the total sum the federal government has given to Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools, as well as mission schools and Conforming or Chinese secondary schools (SMJK) for the 2018-2023 period.

For Tamil vernacular schools (SJKT), the government has spent RM17.57 million on 164 schools this year until October 31. This was apportioned to the maintenance of 90 SJKT (RM6.09 million) and the maintenance of toilets in 164 schools (RM11.48 million).

The total amount for SJKT this year as at October 31 was RM8 million more compared to last year’s RM9.1 million spending on 140 Tamil schools.

Mission schools, which did not receive any allocation last year, were given RM1.15 million this year as at October 31, also for building maintenance and toilets in seven schools.

Nine Conforming schools received RM995,000 for the same purposes this year as at October 31, a spike from RM9,998 in 2022. – December 1, 2023
