Monsters Among Us president Firzana Redzuan stands out for empowering children under 12 to recognise, prevent child abuse

KUALA LUMPUR – Anti-child abuse organisation Monsters Among Us’ (MAU) young co-founder and president Firzana Redzuan was the proud winner of the Public Relations and Communications Association’s (PRCA) Making a Difference Community Award last night.

The 27-year-old bagged a trophy for her commitment to fighting child abuse as well as empowering youths to defend their rights at the Malaysia Public Relations Awards (MRCA) 2023 held at the Aloft Hotel in KL Sentral, here.

Speaking to Scoop, Firzana said she was honoured, as such recognition is usually given to more established and senior organisations.

“There was a gap that MAU saw in the programmes (organised by other non-governmental organisations) that were not designed for younger kids,” she said, referring to the lack of programmes designed for children under 12.

“The majority of our audience is between the ages of 13 and 17. However, we are also engaging children who are younger because there is a gap and many programmes are not designed for them. That is something MAU is actively working on,” she told Scoop after the awards ceremony.

MAU, which was started six years ago and is youth-led, holds training programmes and workshops for schoolchildren nationwide.

“Our goal is to work with children to recognise their rights and gain their participation, not just to provide them with protection.”

“A lot of initiatives in Malaysia currently focus on protection by treating the children at the receiving end or as the receiving party,” Firzana said.

The MRCA 2023 focuses on the theme of artistic craftsmanship in communications.

National broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia won top spot in the leadership category, while the winners included University Malaysia Medical Centre for the in-house campaign of the year category, bzBee Consult Sdn Bhd for the agency campaign of the year, and the healthcare category had joint-winners, Acendus Communications and Strategic Public Relations (SPRG). – December 2, 2023
