Dato Keramat LRT tragedy classified as ‘sudden death’: police

Cops rule out foul play, victim was alive when rescuers arrived but died soon after

3:48 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have classified the fatal incident that severely disrupted the Kelana Jaya LRT line services last night as a case of sudden death.

In a statement, Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah ruled out any elements of foul play in the death at the Dato Keramat LRT station.

He said police received a distress call at about 10.56pm from auxiliary police members at the scene after a man had jumped onto the rail tracks before being hit by a moving train.

“Acting on the information, a police team found that the victim was waiting for the train with other passengers on Platform 1,” he said.

“When the train was about to stop, the victim suddenly jumped and laid down on the tracks. The LRT train proceeded to hit the victim and he was (found) under the train with serious injuries to both legs.”

He said the Fire and Rescue Department personnel attempted to save the victim but found that he had died. His body was then taken to a hospital for postmortem.

Yesterday, Keramat Fire and Rescue Station Operations commander Mohd Fabell Md Yasin, confirmed that a 27-year-old man has died due to extensive injuries sustained after falling onto the train tracks at the station.

He said the man was conscious when the Keramat Fire and Rescue Station personnel arrived on the scene following an emergency call at 9.10pm last night.

Fabell said that the incident involved a man who fell off the platform onto the metal railing, causing both his legs to be crushed by a moving train before it came to an abrupt halt.

He said the victim was extracted by rescue personnel with help from the LRT technical team who aided in reversing the train.

On social media, public transportation users expressed frustrations over delays affecting the Kelana Jaya LRT line, with displeased commuters directing their anger toward rail operator Rapid KL.

Feeder buses were provided between the Damai, Dato Keramat and Jelatek stations with a frequency of up to 20 minutes, depending on traffic flow.

Meanwhile, Ashari also said the man was confirmed dead by an Assistant Medical Officer at 11.13pm yesterday.

He said those with relevant information can contact the Wangsa Maju police headquarters at 03-92899222, or the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-21159999, or reach any nearby police station to assist with investigations. – December 2, 2023
