KUALA LUMPUR – A power outage lasting more than 12 hours at the Johor Bahru border checkpoint has left Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi fuming, calling the incident an embarrassment to the state.

Onn Hafiz said he had instructed Tenaga Nasional Bhd and the Public Works Department (PWD) to immediately resolve the power outage at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex that was originally scheduled from 8pm last night to 4am today for maintenance works.

“What is happening is a huge problem for customers and an embarrassment to the state,” the menteri besar said on Facebook this morning.

“TNB and PWD have been instructed to resolve the issue immediately.”

In his post, Onn Hafiz shared a letter of notice from TNB that stated that the scheduled maintenance would see a power outage until 4am today.

However, based on commuters’ social media posts, electricity had not returned even after the scheduled time, causing a failure of the passport autogates and a traffic backlog.

According to Berita Harian, power was restored to the CIQ building after 10am today.

The notice from TNB stated that besides the Sultan Iskandar checkpoint building, JB Sentral would also be affected by the scheduled power outage. – December 6, 2023
