Athletes, coaches advised to follow Covid-19 SOPs: Jefri

National Sports Council urges following guidelines to safeguard athletes and coaches amidst surge in weekly cases

KUALA LUMPUR — With the rise of Covid-19 cases in the country, athletes and coaches have been advised to follow Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) set by the Health Ministry, said National Sports Council (NSC) athletes division director Jefri Ngadirin.

Recent media reports said that the country has seen a 57.3% increase in weekly Covid-19 cases.

This has certainly raised concerns about how it can impact the sports fraternity.

During the Movement Control Order (MCO) designed to curb the spread of the disease, sporting activities were banned before being allowed again in stages with the relaxation of the MCO.

“We have advised athletes and coaches to follow SOPs set by the Health Ministry.

“At the moment there are no plans to implement training under a quarantined environment or anything like that,” he told reporters when met at the NSC recently.

Jefri added the NSC would seek advice from the National Sports Institute (NSI) and the Health Ministry before implementing any new measures.

“I believe the current SOPs issued by the Health Ministry are sufficient for us to follow to prevent athletes and officials from being infected by Covid-19,” he added.

Malaysia recorded a 57.3% spike in weekly Covid-19 cases, from 2,305 (November 12-18) to 3,626 (November 19-25), the ministry reported.

Some 48% of the new cases are those aged between 20 and 40, while more than 98% are showing mild symptoms. 

So far, eight clusters amounting to 121 cases remain active while 7,248 cumulative clusters were recorded as of November 25.
