Former cricket captain Suresh Navaratnam replaces Bilal Asad as national coach

This follows former coach’s departure as his contract ended on November 30

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) announced today that former national captain Suresh Navaratnam has officially taken over the reins from Bilal Asad as the new national head coach.

With a playing career that spanned 21 years, Suresh is one of the best all-rounders the country has ever produced. 

After retirement, Suresh joined MCA as an operations and administration manager from 1999 to 2002. He then joined the Kinrara Cricket Academy and Stadium as operation and academy manager. 

“The head coach plays a pivotal role between the players and the association, my vision for the team rewards both hard work and innovation.  

“The future is bright for Malaysian cricket, but we can’t rest on our previous success. Yes, we are building on a strong foundation but there is more work to be done.  

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to develop a unique style of cricket for our national team,” he said. 

Outside of his cricket career, Suresh is a Sports Science degree holder from Universiti Malaya and holds a Masters in Business Administration from Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. 

He also holds an Asian Cricket Council Level 2 and Cricket Australia Advanced-Level 2 Coaching badges.  

Suresh’s hiring comes on the back of the expiry of former Pakistan International Bilal’s contract which ended on November 30. 

Bilal’s contract was not extended which led to national players boycotting a national selection game on the same day. – December 8, 2023
