Man who fatally bludgeoned wife with dumbbell gets week-long remand

38-year-old suspect arrives at court today after being arrested at the hospital yesterday

2:17 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Shah Alam Magistrates’ Court has granted a seven-day remand for a man suspected of fatally assaulting his wife with a dumbbell at a residence on Jalan Sg Congkak in Shah Alam.

The remand order, effective today, was issued by Deputy Registrar Saidatul Akmar Suberi.

The media reported that the individual, who is currently without a permanent job, was remanded following an application made by the police.

At 9.20am today, the 38-year-old man arrived at the Shah Alam court, clad in lockup attire and escorted by officers.

Scoop reported yesterday that a woman, also a college lecturer, died allegedly after being bludgeoned by her husband with a dumbbell at their residence.

The police initially received a report at 5.33am from the suspect, claiming that his wife had a seizure. He subsequently took her to Shah Alam Hospital as she was unconscious.

An examination by the doctor found injuries on several parts of the 33-year-old woman’s body.

Further investigations also revealed that the victim was beaten by the suspect at their home out of jealousy before being taken to the hospital.

Acting on this information, the police apprehended the 38-year-old man at Shah Alam Hospital, and the dumbbell believed to have been used to beat his wife was seized.

Shah Alam police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim was reported as saying that the couple had just been married in April 2023 and did not have any children.

The deceased worked at a college in Sarawak and had returned for vacation to attend a family member’s wedding, he said in a statement.

He added that the suspect, who is self-employed, has two criminal records related to assault and drugs. A screening test found him to be positive for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty if convicted. – December 16, 2023
