Malaysia para badminton team end 2023 with three-gold haul in Dubai

Muhammad Fareez Anuar contributes two golds, in men’s singles and doubles

KUALA LUMPUR – The national para badminton team ended 2023 with three gold medals from the Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International in the United Arab Emirates, which ended yesterday.

Muhammad Fareez Anuar won two gold medals, the first in the men’s SU5 singles after beating compatriot Cheah Liek Hou 21-19, 21-19 in the final, and then teaming up with him to win the men’s SU5 doubles gold medal by beating Taiwanese pair Fang Jen-yu-Pu Gui-yu 21-1, 21-10.

Mohd Amin Burhanuddin contributed the final gold medal by winning the SL4 men’s singles by beating India’s Suhas Lalinakere 21-13, 21-16.

Following his doubles win, Liek Hou posted on Facebook that he would begin training for the new season, especially for the Para Badminton World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand in February.

“Thanks 2023 and I hope 2024 will give me strength and see me healthy. Please pray for the best for me next year,” the 2020 Paralympics gold medallist wrote.

Malaysia’s three-gold haul at the Dubai tournament – the last championship to collect qualifying points to the 2024 Paris Paralympics for this year – surpasses the previous edition’s haul of two gold, one silver and one bronze. – December 18, 2023
