KUALA LUMPUR – Following the recent raid on Jalan Silang, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is conducting an inspection of the area today to update its census data.

A DBKL officer told Scoop that today’s operation is nothing out of the ordinary, as it is a routine monitoring task.

“We are conducting a census. We have to update it with the latest numbers, especially since the (raid) issue,” he said, adding that the last census report was taken about six months ago.

He added that today’s monitoring session includes examining shop licences, identifying the number of employees, and checking if they have valid permits.

“We must also determine if the shop is conducting activities according to its licence.

“If you are a textile store but also sell digital devices, that is not allowed,” he said.

Nonetheless, he said that the enforcement has not found any illegal activities since the operation began at 10am.

He added that DBKL would be inspecting Jalan Silang, as well as a few more blocks around it.

Meanwhile, a shop manager who was questioned by DBKL confirmed that such census reports are common.

Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr Zaliha Mustafa said business owners in Kuala Lumpur must comply with DBKL’s regulations, especially regarding leasing out their premises to foreigners without valid documents and employing illegal immigrants.

On Thursday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said 1,101 undocumented migrants were detained by enforcement authorities after a multi-agency operation at Jalan Silang.

He added that contraband such as cigarettes, alcohol, and unapproved medicine, totaling RM104,530, were also seized from raided premises in the area. – December 24, 2023
