Scores of dead fish: Karamunting rep urges Sabah to probe into Sg Segaliud pollution

Sandakan's main water supply source is suspected of being contaminated by harmful chemicals from nearby factories

4:34 PM MYT

SANDAKAN – Karamunting assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin had urged the Sabah government to investigate pollution concerns in Sg Segaliud, the primary source of treated water for 80% of Sandakan’s population.

Hiew emphasised the need for a thorough investigation following reports from locals and media about dead fish found in the river.

It is suspected that harmful chemicals released from nearby palm oil factories may be responsible for the pollution.

“There is nothing wrong for this matter to be investigated thoroughly so that the people in Sandakan can confirm if their treated water supply is safe to be used and consumed,” he said in a statement today.

“The people of Sandakan need a clear explanation. Relevant departments such as the Environmental Department must conduct a thorough investigation because this involves the safety and health of almost everyone in the district.

Additionally, he urged the Sabah Land and Survey Department to examine whether palm oil plantations are adhering to regulations, particularly maintaining a minimum distance of 20m from riverbanks.

Hiew called for stern actions against palm oil companies violating these regulations.

Hiew’s concerns were prompted by a Scoop report highlighting the potential pollution in Sg Segaliud, Kinabatangan.

He recalled that he had previously raised the issue during a Sabah Legislative Assembly session earlier in the year.

Highlighting the importance of addressing the problem, Hiew proposed regular testing of water at the Segaliud Water Treatment Plant to ensure a daily supply of treated water that is safe for consumption.

This suggestion comes amid growing awareness among locals about the source of their water supply from Sg Segaliud, particularly after the salty water issue surfaced in November of the previous year.

“The most concerning matter about the quality of the water supply in Sandakan is that we know that the river (Sg Segaliud) is surrounded by palm oil estates. Pesticides, fertilisers, and other chemicals could flow into the river, polluting the river.” – December 25, 2023
