Malaysians choose solidarity with Palestine over fireworks to welcome 2024

Despite a lack of fireworks, crowds still turned up throughout KL to usher in the new year

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – As the rest of the world illuminated the sky with dazzling fireworks to welcome the new year, Malaysia opted out of the traditional celebrations in solidarity with Palestine.

However, the absence of fireworks did not stop Malaysians from flocking to popular sites in Kuala Lumpur such as Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), Dataran Merdeka, and the newly opened The Exchange Mall TRX.

The Exchange Mall TRX hosted a star-studded concert headlined by South Korean sensation B.I., drawing fans who lined up since noon to witness a spectacular performance.

B.I. took the stage at The Exchange Mall TRX, treating the crowd to his chart-topping hits, including ‘Waterfall,’ ‘Endless Summer,’ and the remix of ‘Smoke.’

X user @imoonday131 shared a video capturing the electrifying atmosphere at the mall during B.I.’s performance.

Meanwhile, at KLCC, despite the park management’s earlier announcement of no fireworks or countdown, the iconic Petronas Twin Towers attracted a sizable crowd.

As the night progressed, the crowd at Suria KLCC grew, causing traffic jams along the road, as reported by Bernama’s official account.

At the stroke of midnight, the Twin Towers illuminated in the colors of Palestine’s flag, a poignant gesture in support of the struggles faced by its people due to the conflict with Israel.

Another user, @MamaJenon, posted a mesmerizing video capturing the symbolic display on the Twin Towers.

At the same time, Dataran Merdeka also chose to forgo a fireworks display, yet the historic site was flooded with people celebrating the transition from 2023 to 2024.

Through a post by @SyeeraFauzi, the user shared moments from the lively gathering at Dataran Merdeka.

In lieu of fireworks, a captivating light show illuminated the skies, offering a unique and meaningful way to mark the beginning of 2024.
