Minister says anti-graft body has a right to investigate but ministry not yet informed of any action relating to case involving two prev govts

PUTRAJAYA – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is welcome to investigate the Communications Ministry if necessary for its probe into the use of RM700 million to promote the two federal governments between 2020 and 2022.

Addressing a press conference, here, today, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has no qualms with the anti-graft agency potentially including his ministry in its investigations.

“As of now, we haven’t been informed (of MACC probing the Communications Ministry).

“For investigative bodies, if they find that there’s a need to carry out such investigations, then that’s their right,” the minister said briefly when questioned on the matter.

Yesterday, it was reported that MACC officers had gone to the Finance Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Department to gather information and obtain relevant documents as part of its probe.

“The expenditure on promotional and publicity initiatives carried out to promote the achievements of the government through all media platforms, including print, digital media and television from 2020 to 2022,” a source said.

MACC’s senior director of investigation Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the probe but did not divulge other information.

Earlier on, Scoop reported that an embezzlement and excessive spending probe is focused on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s time as prime minister.

This is because of the absence of paperwork and documentation involved in the disbursement of about RM500 million for media and publicity contracts. – January 3, 2024
