Two siblings among five charged with murder of man found buried in backyard

One of them, along with another sibling, also charged with disposing of evidence by burying body

KUALA LUMPUR – The affairs of the heart is a tough one to figure out, especially when a man ended up being beaten to death and buried in a backyard for sharing some nude photos.

Five individuals, including two siblings, were brought to the Selayang magistrates’ court today to face charges of killing a security guard, S. Ashok, in between 8am and 3.30pm at Jalan Sg Buaya, Sg Choh, Rawang, on December 23 last year.

The individuals were charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 34 of the code that carries either the death penalty, or a jail term of between 30 and 40 years and a minimum of 12 strokes of whipping.

However, no plea was recorded from G. Ganong Segaran, 34, and G. Malani, 33; with S. Devi, 30, P. Saravanan, 31, and P.K. Vikinesvaran, 20, after their charge was read before magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni, as murder cases are under the purview of the high court.

The group was unrepresented in today’s proceedings.

In the same proceedings, Ganong Segaran and his other sibling G. Dandem Bain, 30, were charged with another offence of disposing evidence related to the murder by burying the deceased’s body with the intention to prevent the perpetrators involved from being punished.

The charge, which is the second offence allegedly committed by Ganong Segaran, is framed under Section 201 of the code, which was also read together with Section 34 of the code that carries a maximum seven years in jail or fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Nor Hakimi Mohamad Rosedin, who handled both cases today, suggested for the court to not offer bail to Ganong Segaran and his brother.

Lawyer Erni Ahmad from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented Dandem, appealed for the court to consider bail as the accused was the sole provider for his family.

The court ordered RM5,000 bail for Dandem with additional conditions to not disturb prosecution witnesses until the case was disposed of, before setting March 4 for case mention.

It was previously reported on December 24 that a man was beaten to death with a stick, bottles and an iron barrel by his girlfriend’s brother before his body was buried behind the girl’s house in Sg Choh.

Earlier today, Gombak police chief Noor Ariffin Nasir was reported to have confirmed that five out of eight suspects caught on December 24 last year in relation to the case were brought to court this morning to face charges related to the murder.

On December 24 last year, he said, the eight individuals were nabbed following an investigation that was prompted after a body was found in the undergrowth behind a house at Sg Choh on December 23

The incident occurred at about 11am when the victim, together with his girlfriend, her brother and two others, went to the house to discuss the victim’s relationship with the girl.

Later at about 5pm, a 27-year-old family member of the girl claimed she had overheard a conversation between her husband and his brother about burying a body and had then called police to inform them of the matter at 11.25pm.

Acting on the woman’s information, police went to the scene and arrested three siblings, including a woman, to facilitate the investigation.

Police also started a manhunt for four people believed to have been involved in the incident, including the victim’s girlfriend. – January 4, 2024
