KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his best wishes to the national football team ahead of their upcoming AFC Asian Cup campaign.
Anwar voiced his confidence in the Harimau Malaya team, led by head coach Kim Pan-gon, as he believes that they will compete strongly in the premier football tournament in Asia.
“These are the fighters of Malaysia, and for the past 42 years, we have eagerly awaited the national team’s return to the Asian Cup stage.
“I have great confidence in the team, and on behalf of all Malaysians, I extend my heartfelt wishes and prayers for the success of the Harimau Malaya squad.
“Fight with all your heart for the badge on the chest,” said Anwar in a video post on Facebook.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed yesterday that Malaysian football fans will have the opportunity to watch the live telecast of all 51 matches of the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to commence in Qatar on January 12, on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
Harimau Malaya, under the guidance of head coach Kim Pan-gon, arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Monday, with the hope of qualifying at least for the round of 16, a target set by the Football Association of Malaysia.
Before the actual tournament, Harimau Malaya will play a closed-door friendly match against Syria on January 8.
World-ranked 130 Malaysia last played Syria in a friendly in September, holding the 91-ranked team to a 2-2 draw.
The last time Malaysia played in the Asian Cup was when they co-hosted the tournament in 2007.
Malaysia, ending a 42-year wait to qualify on merit for the Asian Cup, will begin their Group E campaign against Jordan on January 15, followed by Bahrain on January 20, and two-time champions South Korea on January 25. – January 4, 2024
