At least 3 dead, 28 injured in Bandung train collision

Total of 150 passengers were on both trains in accident that left several carriages overturned

12:41 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Three crew members were left dead and at least 28 injured when two trains collided in Bandung, Indonesia this morning.

The collision involved a train on the Turangga intra-city line that runs from Surabaya to Bandung, and a local train.

Officials said the incident took place at 6.03am local time (7.03am Malaysian time) some 500m from the Cicalengka train station in the West Java province that left several train carriages overturned.

One of the carriages ended up in a padi field.

“We have identified one of the victims as the steward for the Turangga train. The rest have not been identified,” railway operator PT KAI spokesperson Ayen Hanepi told AFP.

The Turangga train had more than 100 passengers, while the local train was carrying over 50 people.

All those aboard the trains have been evacuated and the injured sent to the nearest hospital, according to provincial police spokesman Ibrahim Tompo.

The cause of the accident is unknown as investigations are underway. – January 5, 2024
