Chong Wei’s former physical trainer takes charge of Tze Yong’s fitness

ABM’s Rexy Mainaky says Mohd Roesdi Ab Ghani came on board two months ago to improve Ng Tze Yong’s physical conditioning

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s former physical trainer has been brought in to help improve national men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong’s physical fitness and strength.

Speaking to the media today, Akademi Badminton Malaysia national coaching director Rexy Mainaky said Mohd Roesdi Ab Ghani came on board two months ago in order to help improve Tze Yong’s physical conditioning.

Roesdi was responsible for Chong Wei’s physical fitness from 2013 to 2019.

“We have hired Roesdi to study and help improve Tze Yong’s physical conditioning and strength. He has worked with Tze Yong for two months now.

“We believe he can make the necessary changes.

“At the Arctic Open in Finland last year, Tze Yong complained that his legs were tired after the final and said he wanted to work hard to strengthen his legs. I can see him putting in the work to improve,” said Rexy.

At the same time, men’s singles coach Hendrawan added that even though there is not much difference between Tze Yong and Chong Wei, the latter is a much more natural athlete.

“Tze Yong is different, he is not your typical athlete, he needs time to build that athleticism.

“Before this, we did not have enough time to build Tze Yong’s physical fitness and strength.

“The upcoming Malaysian Open is the first tournament, and we will see how his body responds to the new physical regime,” said Hendrawan.

Meanwhile, Tze Yong said that he has noticed an improvement in his physical strength since working with Roesdi.

At the Malaysia Open, the 23-year-old will face world number 23 Koki Watanabe from Japan.

“I’m focusing on improving my fitness, and I can feel my body getting stronger. I can feel it in my legs too.

“I’m happy with the one month of training since the end of last season, I can’t choose my opponent and can only focus on every single match,” said Tze Yong. – January 5, 2024
